A community hub, which ceased operations last year due to financial difficulties, has been revitalized and reopened with the substantial aid of volunteers. The former St Marks and Hesters Way Community Centre, now rebranded as Common Ground, formally commenced its new chapter on January 17th, following the completion of its initial refurbishment phase.
Managed by the Community Interest Company, Mission Inclusion, the centre has ambitious plans to host educational, cultural, and wellness services. The organization reported an overwhelming level of support from the local community, with volunteers contributing approximately 5,000 hours towards the renovation efforts.
Common Ground's mission is to serve as an inclusive space for everyone. The company intends to generate income by renting out the venue for various classes, such as yoga and dance, and its Rima hall is available for celebrations and community gatherings.
Significant investment is still required for comprehensive renovations, estimated at £1m. This funding will be sourced through the centre's operational income, fundraising initiatives, sponsorships, and local business donations. The project has also received backing from Cheltenham Borough Council, Gloucestershire County Council, and the Sumerfield Trust.
