Coal India Production Dips 9.7%, Energy Demands Strain
1 May
Summary
- Coal India production fell 9.7% to 56.1 million tonnes in April.
- Coal powers over 70% of India's electricity generation.
- Peak power demand hit record highs due to intense heatwaves.

State-owned Coal India Ltd. announced a 9.7% decline in coal production for April, producing 56.1 million tonnes compared to 62.1 million tonnes in the same month last year. This reduction is significant as coal remains the primary energy source for India, accounting for over 70% of its electricity generation.
The drop in output coincides with soaring energy demands. India's peak power demand reached a record 255.85 GW recently, exacerbated by severe heatwave conditions across northern, central, and western regions. This surge in consumption, largely due to increased use of air conditioners and cooling devices, puts immense pressure on existing energy supplies.
Coal India's offtake, or sales, also saw a marginal decrease of two percent to 63.2 million tonnes in April. While some subsidiaries experienced production declines, others reported positive growth. The company did not disclose the specific reasons behind the dip in both production and sales. This situation could potentially lead to increased reliance on costlier imported coal to meet the nation's energy needs.
