India Opens Coal Auctions to Neighbors
12 May
Summary
- Coal India offered 30.5 million tonnes in April auctions.
- Global energy prices surge due to West Asia tensions.
- Neighbors Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal can bid directly from 2026.

Coal India Limited (CIL) offered 30.5 million tonnes of coal through online auctions in April. This quantity represents a 6% decrease compared to the 32.5 million tonnes offered in March.
The reduction occurs amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have driven up global energy prices. Consequently, power plants are increasing their reliance on coal to ensure energy security.
CIL is streamlining its auction process through the Single Window Mode Agnostic (SWMA) system, launched in 2022 for easier and more transparent procurement. This system consolidates various auction windows into a single platform.
In a significant policy shift, CIL will permit direct participation in its SWMA auctions for coal consumers in neighboring countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal—effective January 1, 2026. Previously, these international buyers could only procure Indian coal through domestic traders.
This move aims to facilitate more effective utilization of surplus coal resources and promote greater transparency and market integration. CIL's production for the recently concluded FY26 was 768.1 million tonnes, a 1.7% drop from 781.1 million tonnes in FY25.
