Cinecittà Studios has announced a notable return to profitability, reporting an operating profit of €1.1 million for fiscal year 2025. This marks a substantial recovery following fiscal year 2024, during which the studios experienced approximately $12 million in losses. The turnaround coincides with a period of intense activity, as three major Hollywood productions are currently utilizing the revamped facilities.
Among the high-profile shoots are Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection of the Christ," Antoine Fuqua's untitled Netflix movie featuring Denzel Washington, and Netflix's "Assassin's Creed" live-action series. These productions highlight Cinecittà's renewed appeal to international filmmakers, a success attributed in part to aggressive recruitment efforts and Italy's attractive 40% tax rebate for film and TV shoots.
The studio's financial improvement is underpinned by a comprehensive renovation plan funded by a €233 million loan from the European Union's post-pandemic recovery fund. This six-year initiative, initiated in 2021 and on schedule for completion in June 2026, will result in 25 state-of-the-art sound stages, expanded backlot space, and dedicated production offices.
Cinecittà's capacity is set to increase by 60% with the restoration of its water tank and the upgrading of its facilities. The studios also offer advanced post-production services, including dubbing, mixing, and film restoration, attracting projects even those not filmed on-site, such as Netflix's "Wednesday" and "After the Hunt."
