These movements heavily influenced the Nasdaq and S&P 500. Other market factors included Goldman Sachs reversing recent gains and Caterpillar continuing its slide, both impacting the Dow.
Conversely, the healthcare sector provided support. UnitedHealth Group's stock surged after reporting strong earnings and raising guidance. Abbott Laboratories also saw substantial gains following a positive earnings report. Despite positive economic data, including retail sales matching expectations and lower jobless claims, the market remained largely under the influence of the chip sector's downturn, with investors concerned about rising capital requirements meeting AI demand.
