China's Mega Egg City: 3 Million Hens, 1 Human

The CP Pinggu Egg Complex, located near Beijing, represents a significant leap in agricultural technology. This facility is designed to house over three million hens and a million pullets, with millions of birds distributed across numerous automated barns. Each barn is equipped with intelligent robots that continuously monitor environmental conditions like temperature and humidity, as well as the health of the poultry. These robots alert the sole human manager in each barn to any problems, ensuring the well-being of the flock.

This advanced farm is engineered to produce more than three million eggs daily, contributing to an annual output of up to one billion eggs. The hens within this system produce approximately 300 eggs per year, exceeding the average due to the precise environmental controls and health monitoring. The facility also generates substantial amounts of organic fertilizer, which is utilized in a nearby peach orchard, demonstrating an integrated approach to agricultural byproducts.

The development of the CP Pinggu Egg Complex is a result of a public-private partnership involving the Chinese government, the China Development Bank, and the Charoen Pokphand Group. The initiative was driven by the need for sterile and automated production methods, particularly in light of avian flu risks in traditional farming. The prototype for this complex was inspired by Thailand's "Nong Wah" model, adapted to meet China's agricultural modernization goals.
