AI Fuels China's Economic Surge

China's economy saw a notable surge in the second quarter, with artificial intelligence emerging as its primary growth engine. The information and communications technology sector, particularly electronics manufacturing and IT services, contributed substantially to the nation's economic expansion. This sector provided approximately one-third of the annual GDP growth and about double its usual quarter-on-quarter contribution.

Electronics manufacturing benefited from increased semiconductor production and overseas demand for Chinese chips and computing equipment. While China may not produce advanced AI training processors, it supplies essential mature chips and hardware for AI infrastructure. IT and telecommunications services also surpassed other sectors, including retail and hospitality, in their contribution to services growth.

Elsewhere, industrial activity softened, partly due to reduced refined fuel and petrochemical production. This contributed to a slowdown in overall GDP growth. Supply constraints are a concern, with capacity utilization in the electronics sector nearing peak levels.

Manufacturers are actively expanding production, with fixed investment in electronics manufacturing rising significantly in the first half of the year. Several new memory chip fabrication plants are expected to commence operations within the next year, potentially increasing production capacity. AI's role in offsetting economic weaknesses is expected to continue, though this increased reliance poses risks tied to global AI spending.
