China's AI Stars Shine, Big Tech Falters

China's technology sector is witnessing a pronounced shift, with pure artificial intelligence plays dramatically outperforming established big tech firms. The CSI artificial intelligence index has surged more than 28% since the start of 2026, while the Hang Seng Tech index, home to giants like Alibaba and Tencent, has fallen over 8% during the same period. Zhipu's stock has surged 622%, and MiniMax's has climbed 318%, reflecting a market preference for specialized AI innovators. Analysts note this divergence signals a changing power dynamic, with companies focused on AI development and hardware, like AI chip designer Cambricon Technologies and optical transceiver manufacturers, now capturing investor attention over traditional internet platform companies.

This trend is supported by Beijing's push for technological self-sufficiency and robust global demand for AI infrastructure components. Companies like Zhongji Innolight have seen their shares skyrocket by 944%, and SMIC, China's largest chip foundry, has also seen a significant rise. Despite geopolitical tensions and US blacklisting of certain Chinese AI firms, foreign capital continues to flow into China's stock market, indicating sustained investor interest in the nation's burgeoning AI ecosystem.
