China's AI Boom Fuels 4.5% Growth Amidst Domestic Woes
19 Oct
Summary
- China's Q3 2026 economy grew 4.5%, up from 4.3% in Q2.
- AI infrastructure exports are the main driver of growth.
- Domestic consumption and the property crisis remain weak.
China's economy registered a 4.5% growth in the third quarter of 2026, a notable increase from the 4.3% recorded in the second quarter. This recovery is largely attributed to strong global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, which has significantly boosted the country's exports.
Despite the positive headline figure, the underlying economic picture reveals persistent weaknesses. Domestic consumption remains sluggish, with retail sales showing only a modest increase. Furthermore, the property market crisis continues to deepen, with property investment declining significantly year-on-year.
Fixed-asset investment, encompassing infrastructure and manufacturing, also saw a contraction, underscoring the uneven nature of the economic expansion. Economists express concerns about the sustainability of a growth model heavily reliant on exports, which could expose China to trade barriers and geopolitical risks.
Authorities in Beijing have implemented various measures to support the economy, including accelerating infrastructure projects and reducing borrowing costs. However, the International Monetary Fund has cautioned that these efforts may only partly offset the impact of weak domestic demand and structural headwinds.
