The Broadway bus terminus in Chennai will cease operations starting January 24 to accommodate the construction of a new multimodal facility complex. This development includes a modern bus terminus, with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) redirecting all bus services to temporary locations at Royapuram and Island Grounds.
Chennai Metro Rail officials anticipate that the new bus terminal, featuring two basement levels, will be finished within 24 months. The comprehensive eight-floor multimodal facility, spanning 11.65 lakh square feet, is slated for completion by 2028. This project signifies a major transit overhaul for the city.
Bus routes previously operating via Anna Salai and EVR Periyar Salai will shift to the Royapuram temporary terminus. Services heading towards Royapuram will make designated stops on North Fort Road, while buses originating from Royapuram will pick up passengers near Parry's Corner and the high court bus stop. Routes serving areas like Beach Station, Mannadi, EVR Salai, and Vepery will operate from the Island Grounds temporary terminus, involving diversions via specific flyovers and roads to serve passengers effectively.
