Auto Drivers Rally Demanding Fare Revision Amid Delays

Auto fare revisions for over three lakh drivers statewide are likely to be postponed further. The transport commissionerate has scheduled another meeting for September 23 at its Guindy office to gather input from consumer organizations regarding fee fixation.
This decision follows earlier consultation meetings held on July 9, where both drivers' unions and consumer organizations submitted their proposals. A fee committee was subsequently formed by the state government to deliberate with the drivers' unions, leading to the current separate meeting with consumer groups.
The demand for fare revision has been ongoing since the last rates were established in 2013. Drivers are advocating for a base fare of ₹60 for the initial 1.5 kilometers and ₹30 for each subsequent kilometer. However, consumer representatives propose a mutually beneficial rate of ₹50 for the base fare and ₹20 per kilometer.
Frustrated by the repeated delays, auto drivers are planning a rally to the secretariat on September 26, emphasizing their demand for an immediate fare increase. Union leaders view the ongoing meetings as a tactic to further postpone the necessary adjustments.
