Cerebras IPO: $40B Valuation for AI Chip Giant
14 May
Summary
- Cerebras debuted on public markets, reaching a $40 billion valuation.
- The AI chipmaker raised $5.5 billion in its initial public offering.
- Its large, dinner-plate-sized chips aim to challenge Nvidia's market dominance.

Cerebras Systems, an AI chipmaker, has achieved a significant milestone with its initial public offering (IPO), raising $5.5 billion and reaching a valuation of about $40 billion. This event signals robust investor interest in the AI and semiconductor sectors. The IPO's pricing exceeded initial targets, reflecting strong demand for the company's shares.
Valued at $8.1 billion in a private financing round just last September, Cerebras' current valuation marks a substantial increase. The company's strategy centers on its distinctive, large silicon chips, comparable in size to a dinner plate, which are designed to be 58 times larger than typical Nvidia GPUs.
These oversized chips are engineered for AI inference, aiming to overcome the limitations of linking numerous smaller chips. Cerebras reported a $146 million operating loss on $510 million in sales for 2025, with revenue growing by 76% year-on-year. The company is capitalizing on a widespread shortage of AI computing power.
Recent partnerships, including a substantial $20 billion deal with OpenAI for chip deployment and hardware co-design, bolster Cerebras' market position. OpenAI also provided a $1 billion working capital loan to the chip designer. These collaborations aim to reduce reliance on key customers in the United Arab Emirates, which previously accounted for 86% of revenues.
Cerebras emerges as a notable challenger to Nvidia's 80% market share in AI processors. Other competitors include Intel-backed SambaNova and Groq. Securing manufacturing capacity and overcoming the challenges of producing very large, potentially flawed silicon chips are key hurdles for Cerebras and its rivals.
