24 May
Summary
- Celsius expands its fizz-free line to appeal to wellness-focused Gen Z.
- Noncarbonated drinks offer a smoother flavor experience, better with meals.
- Hint sees a parallel shift to noncarbonated options as a growth strategy.

The energy drink market is witnessing a significant shift as Celsius expands its fizz-free beverage options. This strategic move caters to a growing demand among Gen Z for wellness-focused products and a general consumer preference for noncarbonated drinks. Previously, carbonated energy drinks dominated, but Celsius's innovation allows it to capture consumers seeking alternatives to tea and coffee.
The brand's existing noncarbonated peach mango green tea flavor has consistently been a top performer, highlighting consumer interest. Celsius Chief Brand Officer Kyle Watson noted that focus groups reveal a dislike for sparkling beverages among many consumers. The appeal of functional beverages, like those with high protein or caffeine, is increasingly tied to a superior flavor experience and smoother consumption.
Watson emphasized that the fizz-free line's smooth texture makes it an ideal accompaniment to meals, a consumption occasion for about 37% of Celsius drinkers. Packaging has been updated to prominently feature the 'fizz-free' attribute, reinforcing the smooth, refreshing flavor profile. This strategy has already helped Celsius grow sales among key demographics like Gen Z and women.
Other beverage companies are also capitalizing on this trend. Hint, a flavored water brand, is pivoting towards its noncarbonated offerings, seeing the consumer shift away from bubbles as a significant growth opportunity. Founder Michael Pengue likens the current trend to a previous surge in sparkling water sales when consumers sought healthier alternatives to traditional soft drinks.
