Summary
- CATL's new batteries aim to electrify heavy-duty trucks.
- Battery swapping technology is presented as a key solution.
- CATL plans thousands of swapping stations across China.

Chinese battery giant CATL has unveiled its Tianxing II platform, introducing lighter and thinner battery designs specifically for heavy-duty trucks. This technological advancement is coupled with the Qiji battery-swapping system, designed to replace a truck's battery in approximately five minutes, addressing a critical need for rapid energy replenishment in long-haul freight.
CATL's strategy heavily relies on expanding its battery-swapping network, with ambitious plans to establish 900 heavy-truck swapping stations in China by the end of 2026 and scaling to 2,000 by 2027. The company's long-term vision includes a network of 10,000 stations, aiming to overcome significant obstacles to electric truck adoption, such as high vehicle costs and limited charging infrastructure.
This initiative comes as global heavy-truck electrification remains below 10%, presenting a substantial growth opportunity driven by government initiatives to reduce transport emissions. CATL believes battery swapping offers a more practical and efficient solution for heavy trucks compared to the pursuit of faster charging speeds, especially considering the thermal and energy loss issues associated with larger battery packs. The Tianxing II batteries boast a 760-kilowatt-hour capacity, offering a range exceeding 600 km, and feature standardized swap blocks that reduce component numbers and costs.
CATL is also forging international partnerships, having recently signed an agreement with DHL Group to develop green freight corridors in Europe. This collaboration aims to advance electric truck adoption for logistics operations, signaling a broader commitment to electrifying global freight transport.
