Caterham Eyesore Faces Council Action
29 Mar
Summary
- Council approves use of High Street Rental Auction for vacant building.
- Multiple owners and high rents complicate property acquisition.
- Project estimated to cost £15,000, with potential partial recovery.

A former post office building in Caterham, described as a significant eyesore, is set to be re-occupied following a decision by Tandridge District Council. Councillors approved the use of a Government-backed High Street Rental Auction mechanism to force the Station Avenue site into being let.
This move comes after years of frustration with the building remaining vacant. Council members acknowledged the property's complex ownership structure and high rental and sale prices, which have hindered previous attempts at occupation. Officers also cautioned that the auction process might not guarantee suitable offers or a full cost recovery for the council.
The initiative is projected to incur approximately £15,000 in expenses. While some funding might be recouped through grants and fees, a significant portion of the cost is attributed to staff time. Despite financial reservations and concerns about setting a precedent, the council has opted to move forward with the auction, viewing it as a vital step towards town center revitalization.
