CarMax Shares Tumble on Weak Earnings
17 Apr
Summary
- CarMax shares dropped 13.3% after a Q4 2026 earnings miss.
- New CEO faces a price-sensitive consumer auto market.
- Gross profit fell 9.4% due to lower vehicle selling prices.

CarMax (NYSE: KMX) experienced a significant stock decline of 13.3% in the week leading up to Friday morning. This downturn followed the release of its disappointing fourth-quarter fiscal year 2026 earnings report.
Under the leadership of its new CEO, Keith Barr, the company is confronting challenging end markets. The current consumer automotive market is highly price-sensitive, with a clear shift towards lower-priced models. This trend impacts both new and used vehicle sales, including those offered by CarMax.
To stimulate volume growth, CarMax implemented lower pricing for its vehicles. While this contributed to a 0.7% increase in unit sales for the quarter, it also led to a 0.4% decrease in the average selling price of used cars and a 3.3% drop in wholesale vehicle prices. Consequently, the company's gross profit for the quarter decreased by 9.4% compared to the previous year, totaling $605.3 million.
In response to these market conditions, CarMax's new CEO plans to reduce expenses by $200 million in fiscal year 2027. This restructuring aims to better navigate margin challenges arising from price reductions. The company also noted a strategic shift to purchasing more used cars directly from consumers rather than dealers, a move expected to improve profitability.
