BuzzBallz Accused of Greenwashing: Recyclable Claims Debunked
25 Jul
Summary
- BuzzBallz packaging cannot be recycled due to mixed materials.
- Experts label company's recyclability claims as greenwashing.
- Deleted company statements falsely assured UK consumers of recyclability.

BuzzBallz, a rapidly growing alcoholic beverage brand favored by Gen Z, is facing significant criticism for allegedly misleading consumers about the recyclability of its packaging. Despite claims on its website, environmental experts assert that the unique combination of PET plastic and an aluminum lid makes the BuzzBallz containers unrecyclable in the UK.
Global environmental body WRAP highlighted that no local UK facilities accept these mixed-material containers. The shape of the BuzzBallz also poses challenges for sorting machinery, potentially contaminating plastic recycling streams. Company statements, including deleted FAQs and a mission statement that partnered with the US-only TerraCycle scheme, previously suggested recyclability, which has been described as "greenwashing."
BuzzBallz, now owned by the Sazerac Company, has blamed a website error for the misinformation. However, experts like Adam Herriott from WRAP emphasize that mixing packaging types is environmentally unsound. Laura Anderson, an environmental scientist, stated that clearer communication, even if it means admitting non-recyclability, would be preferable to misleading claims.
