Buffett's $140 Billion Farewell: A New Philanthropic Era

Warren Buffett, age 95, has committed his remaining Berkshire Hathaway shares, valued at more than $140 billion, to four family foundations. This monumental philanthropic plan is slated for completion by December 31, 2034, establishing a firm deadline regardless of his mortality.

An initial donation of approximately $6 billion in Berkshire Hathaway Class B stock was transferred on July 14, 2026. This marks the first time since 2006 that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a long-time recipient of Buffett's largesse, received no funds.

The bulk of the fortune will be distributed to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation. Buffett intends for the money to be spent on current needs, fulfilling his pledge to donate 99.5% of his estate to philanthropy.

Buffett retains control of Berkshire Hathaway through his Class A shares, which carry significant voting power. This structure allows for his effective control over the company as his economic stake diminishes with each donation.

Berkshire shareholders can expect a gradual liquidation of shares by the foundations over many years, avoiding any sudden market impact. Management under CEO Greg Abel has already shown increased capital deployment, with significant share buybacks and acquisitions in Q2 2026.

This pledge of approximately $200 billion in total is the largest philanthropic commitment in American history. It underscores Buffett's commitment to philanthropy, a cause he co-founded with Bill and Melinda Gates through the Giving Pledge.
