As of November 2025, a new generation of speed cameras that can monitor both speed and red light running has become the most lucrative in Britain, generating millions in fines for the government. A study covering over 7,000 cameras has identified the 600 worst speed trap hotspots, with the busiest one located at the A38 Kings Mill Road West junction in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
This camera alone caught 24,311 speeding drivers in the 12 months leading up to April 2025, equating to almost 70 motorists per day. The next most prolific was on the A6 in Leicester, which initially was installed to catch red light runners but was later adapted to monitor speeds as well.
These 'speed on green' cameras are being increasingly deployed across the country, trapping drivers who put their foot down to try and beat the lights as they change. Experts estimate that over 10 million speeding tickets were issued in the past year, potentially generating £1 billion in revenue for the government.
