East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced its application for National Lottery Heritage Fund money for a new National Museum of Brewing in Burton-upon-Trent was unsuccessful. This news comes after the closure of the National Brewery Centre in 2022, which previously housed the town's brewing heritage collection. The council is now actively seeking private investment to revive the project.
Despite the disappointment, council officials expressed optimism, noting positive feedback on the museum's proposals. They plan to reapply for funding once private sector support is secured. The heritage collection remains in storage at a unit on Station Street, with the lease extended. The project's success is now seen as dependent on support from the government and the brewing industry.
Meanwhile, other regeneration projects in the Old Brewery Quarter will continue. Demolition of Trent House and the data centre is proceeding, with initial work set to begin on the new Washlands visitor centre by April 2026. Repairs to listed buildings and conversion work for a new unit are also scheduled for next year.
