18 Mar
Summary
- Brandon council is considering a $6-million loan for a new outdoor aquatic centre.
- The current 50-year-old Kinsmen Centennial Pool faces mechanical issues and frequent closures.
- The loan aims to fund the design and construction of a modern facility, with a target opening in 2028.
Brandon city council is moving forward with plans for a new outdoor aquatic centre, having passed the first of three readings for a bylaw to borrow approximately $6.1 million. This significant investment is earmarked for the design and construction of a modern facility, intended to replace the city's aging Kinsmen Centennial Pool. The current outdoor pool, which is over 50 years old, has experienced numerous mechanical issues, including a month-long closure last summer due to a broken water line.
Council members acknowledge that the proposed loan and potential tax implications may be met with mixed reactions from residents. However, they emphasize the need for infrastructure investment in recreational facilities to maintain the city's quality of life. Options for the new facility's design and location have been considered, with a smaller, more manageable structure being favored over a previously proposed "Taj Mahal" of aquatic complexes. The project's detailed design is budgeted for 2026, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027, aiming for a 2028 opening.
Mayor Jeff Fawcett noted that while borrowing is not ideal, this loan is comparatively small, especially alongside major infrastructure projects like water-treatment plant upgrades. He highlighted that the aquatic centre offers a more immediate benefit and joy to the community, particularly for young people during Brandon's short summers. Resident Don Vanhantsaeme expressed strong support for the initiative, stressing the importance of providing recreational spaces for children.
