Boohoo Fined €2.3M for Fake Discounts in France
20 Aug
Summary
- Boohoo fined €2.3 million for deceptive sales tactics.
- Forty percent of analyzed promotions were not real discounts.
- Retailer also misused terms like 'leather' for synthetic products.

In a significant regulatory action, France has imposed a €2.3 million fine on the British fast-fashion company Boohoo. The fine stems from deceptive practices identified on the retailer's website, primarily concerning fake discounts that misled consumers about potential savings. The Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) stated that a substantial portion of promotions analyzed were not legitimate price reductions.
Further scrutiny revealed that 40% of the analyzed promotions were not actual price decreases, while 7% offered lower savings than advertised. Alarmingly, 48% of the examined offers were found to be price increases, not discounts. Additionally, Boohoo faced accusations of misrepresenting product materials, using terms like "leather" and "suede" for synthetic items, violating French labeling regulations.
This penalty is part of a wider regulatory push by the French government against online fast-fashion businesses. Lawmakers have recently passed legislation imposing fines on what they term "disposable" clothing, with platforms like Shein and Temu also facing increased scrutiny. Boohoo has not yet responded to requests for comment on the ruling.
