Summary
- Blackstone and Anuj Tyagi are launching a new general insurance company in India.
- The venture will be 90% foreign-owned following recent FDI limit increases.
- The company plans to utilize generative and agentic AI across all operations.

Blackstone, in collaboration with former HDFC Ergo CEO Anuj Tyagi, is set to launch a new general insurance company in India. This venture will be 90% foreign-owned, a significant development enabled by recent increases in foreign direct investment (FDI) limits to 100% in the insurance sector. The proposed company has filed an R1 application with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for approval.
Leveraging advanced technology is a cornerstone of this new enterprise. Unlike traditional insurers, the Blackstone-backed firm intends to build an artificial intelligence-native platform from its inception. It plans to integrate generative AI and agentic AI capabilities throughout its operations, including underwriting, claims processing, customer service, and distribution channels.
This initiative reflects the escalating interest from global investors in India's robust non-life insurance industry. The market, with an annual gross direct premium exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore, has shown consistent annual growth of approximately 9-10%. This growth is propelled by rising health insurance adoption, increasing demand for motor insurance, and expanding corporate risk coverage needs.
