Binance Halts EU Trading After MiCA Deadline Miss
6 Jul
Summary
- Binance suspended trading in France and other EU nations.
- Two million French users can access assets but not trade.
- Rivals like Coinbase vie for affected Binance users.

Binance has ceased crypto trading operations in France and multiple other European nations after missing the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory deadline. This action impacts millions of users, with around two million in France now restricted from spot, margin, and other trading services, although asset withdrawals remain possible.
The suspension underscores the critical importance of regulatory adherence within the EU's burgeoning digital asset market. Competitors like Coinbase and OKX, having secured MiCA licenses, are strategically positioned to attract traders seeking uninterrupted access to the European crypto landscape.
Binance had previously attempted to navigate the licensing process through Greece and later sought authorization in another member state. However, these efforts did not result in an approved license before the July 1 implementation of MiCA, which mandates compliance for crypto-asset service providers operating within the EU.
This development highlights the stringent nature of MiCA, effectively barring unlicensed exchanges from offering regulated crypto trading services throughout the bloc. As of late June, only a small fraction of applications had been approved, indicating a rigorous vetting process for crypto firms.
