Bharti Eyes Bigger BT Stake, Skips Full Takeover
22 May
Summary
- Bharti Enterprises may increase its stake in BT to nearly 29.9%.
- A full takeover bid for BT is not planned by the Indian conglomerate.
- UK government approval is required for any stake increase beyond 25%.
Bharti Enterprises, an Indian conglomerate, is exploring the possibility of increasing its shareholding in the British telecoms company BT. The group is reportedly seeking UK government approval to raise its stake to just under 29.9%, a move that would provide greater economic exposure to BT without initiating a full takeover bid.
Any potential increase beyond the current 25% threshold would require scrutiny under the National Security and Investment Act. Bharti initially acquired a significant stake in BT in 2024. This acquisition was approved by the UK government following a national security assessment.
Bharti's representatives have stated they are satisfied with their current 24.95% shareholding and have no immediate plans to increase it. The UK government has declined to comment on the matter, and BT has referred inquiries to the government and Bharti.
Since Bharti acquired its stake, BT shares have seen a notable increase of 55%. Bharti founders have also joined the BT board as non-independent non-executive directors, indicating continued strategic interest.
