Bengaluru Drenched in Deep Purple Jamun Glut
16 Jun
Summary
- Jamun has flooded Bengaluru markets due to a strong harvest and favorable weather.
- Despite increased arrivals, jamun prices have remained stable and affordable.
- Favorable climatic conditions, including hot and humid weather, boosted the jamun yield.

Markets across Bengaluru are currently overflowing with jamun, a seasonal fruit whose vibrant purple hue dominates stalls and carts. This year's monsoon has seen an exceptional surge in jamun arrivals, attributed to a robust harvest bolstered by favorable weather patterns in rural Karnataka and steady supplies from neighboring states.
Traders report a significant increase in stock at wholesale hubs, yet prices have largely stabilized. Wholesalers are selling jamun for Rs 20-Rs 30 per quarter kilogram, with retail vendors pricing it between Rs 25 and Rs 35. This abundance, however, has led to a quicker depletion of stock daily as vendors purchase early.
Experts attribute the bountiful yield to a salubrious climate featuring a combination of hot and humid weather, which provided essential stress for flowering and fruiting. This contrasts with previous seasons affected by drought. Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and parts of Andhra Pradesh have seen particularly good harvests, with individual trees yielding substantially.
Jamun is highly valued for its medicinal properties, especially its low glycemic index which makes it suitable for diabetics. Its natural compounds aid in blood sugar regulation, and it is rich in fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and iron, ensuring continued demand.
