BAT Slashes Workforce by 20% for AI Push

British American Tobacco has announced a substantial workforce reduction, with plans to eliminate 5,500 jobs and transition 3,500 additional roles to strategic partners. This overhaul represents approximately 20% of the company's global workforce and is a direct result of its ongoing AI-driven transformation program. The company confirmed that most of these changes have been communicated to affected employees, with remaining consultations adhering to local regulations.

This significant restructuring initiative is designed to achieve substantial cost savings. British American Tobacco anticipates these efforts will generate £600 million in annualized incremental savings by 2028, building upon a previously targeted £500 million in savings expected by 2027. The United States market is excluded from these specific workforce adjustments.
