Bajaj Auto: Drought Dampens Rural Sales, Eyes KTM's Japan Entry
28 Oct
Summary
- Drought could worsen rural financing and entry-level motorcycle demand.
- KTM's financial recovery may open a pathway for Bajaj into Japan.
- Premium motorcycle and EV segments continue to outperform slower categories.
Bajaj Auto is navigating a period of contrasting market dynamics. Drought conditions are anticipated to deepen the existing slowdown in demand for entry-level motorcycles and potentially restrict rural financing, especially from January to March 2027. This follows two previous quarters where pressure on lower-income buyers intensified. Financiers may adopt a more cautious approach to lending in affected agricultural areas.
Despite these domestic headwinds, Bajaj Auto is exploring international growth. The recovery of its Austrian partner, KTM, which has returned to break-even after financial difficulties, presents an opportunity. This includes potential synergies in markets like Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines. Furthermore, KTM's established presence in Japan could provide Bajaj with an entry route into that market without the need for new distribution infrastructure.
Industry data indicates a widening demand gap. While overall domestic motorcycle dispatches saw a 10% increase from April to September 2026, the smaller 100-125cc categories grew by only around 5%, with their market share declining. In contrast, the 150-350cc categories experienced robust growth of approximately 31%. Bajaj's own volumes in the 100-110cc and 110-125cc segments declined significantly, with the company prioritizing profitability over volume in these price-sensitive categories.
Bajaj Auto's strategy involves supporting KTM's operational stabilization while exploring collaborative growth avenues. The company provided support through component sourcing, cost reductions, and governance oversight. In Brazil, KTM has established an assembly operation alongside Bajaj's facility, with Bajaj Brazil handling marketing through its existing network. Deeper collaboration with KTM is being considered cautiously until KTM's new management stabilizes operations.
