Grupa Azoty SA is pursuing a crucial debt restructuring plan for its Polyolefins SA unit, a major propylene and polypropylene complex. The company aims to settle approximately 17% of the unit's 6.1 billion zloty in debt, signaling a substantial writedown request to creditors. This financial maneuver is a prerequisite for the proposed sale of the plant to Orlen SA, which previously offered 1.02 billion zloty.
The Polyolefins facility, intended to diversify Azoty's product range into plastics, has encountered significant difficulties. These include substantial overspending and ongoing legal disputes with its contractor, Hyundai Engineering Co. Ltd. Consequently, the plant's construction is not fully complete, and it currently operates at limited capacity.
Financial stabilization is paramount for Grupa Azoty, which is grappling with a net debt of 4.3 billion zloty. The company is also seeking to raise 600 million zloty through a share sale to the State Treasury. These measures are vital after three consecutive years of financial losses and are intended to bolster the company's balance sheet and facilitate the Polyolefins sale.
