Sam Senior, founder of Monarch, notes that large Australian companies seek his insights into future AI advancements, illustrating a demand for local expertise. Despite this, many Australian founders, including Nick Rudder (Sphere) and Micah Hill-Smith (Artificial Analysis), choose to build their companies in the US.

This migration is fueled by significantly larger investment opportunities. In the first half of 2026, US startups secured $US412.7 billion, vastly outstripping the approximately $5 billion raised by Australian startups throughout 2025. While Australia produces highly skilled talent, including those moving to companies like Anthropic, the US ecosystem offers more accessible funding and a faster-paced environment, with some estimating it to be 50 times easier to raise capital there.

However, the allure of San Francisco is tempered by high living costs and potential downsides, such as a less original investment landscape and personal challenges like healthcare access. Some founders are intentionally establishing Australian offices, aiming to foster a local tech ecosystem and offer opportunities similar to those they benefited from.
