AT&T has agreed to a $177 million settlement to compensate over 110 million customers affected by data breaches in 2019 and 2024. The lawsuit alleged insufficient data protection and delayed notification. Eligible customers who filed claims by last December and can document financial losses may receive up to $7,500. The 2019 breach could yield up to $5,000 for those with Social Security numbers stolen and proven losses.
The 2024 breach, impacting nearly 109 million wireless customers, exposed call and text records. Affected individuals proving financial loss may receive up to $2,500. Customers impacted by both breaches and with documented losses are eligible for the maximum $7,500. Those without loss documentation will receive much smaller tiered payments, from $6.50 to $40, distributed pro rata.
Payouts are expected within 60 days of final court approval, potentially by early 2027, unless AT&T appeals the decision by November 2. A total of 4.9 million eligible customers filed claims.
