Astra Microwave Splits: Space Arm Takes Flight
8 Jun
Summary
- Astra Microwave approved demerger of Space, Meteorology business.
- Demerger aims to unlock value for both defence parent and space arm.
- The demerger process has just begun, with key decisions pending.

Astra Microwave Products' board recently granted in-principle approval to demerge its Space, Meteorology, and Hydrology division into a distinct listed company. This strategic move, initiated on February 27, 2026, aims to address the conglomerate discount by allowing each business segment to operate independently.
The parent company, Astra Microwave Products, will retain its robust defence-electronics business, which reported an 11% revenue increase to ₹1,156 crore in FY26. This division supplies critical components to organizations like ISRO and DRDO.
The carved-out entity, Astra Space Technologies Private Limited (ASTPL), will encompass the space heritage, including a 25-year relationship with ISRO, and a growing meteorology franchise focused on Doppler weather radars.
Management anticipates that separating these businesses will provide sharper focus, enable dedicated growth strategies, and create clearer investment propositions for shareholders. While the demerger is expected to be completed by Q1 FY28 (mid-2027), key details such as the share-exchange ratio are still under deliberation, with a crucial board meeting scheduled for June 10, 2026.
This demerger is distinct from previous cases as Astra Microwave is not considered 'under-loved'; instead, the focus is on providing clarity and allowing a scarce, pure-play NewSpace entity to establish its own market valuation.
