Luxury Titan Arnault Exits World's Top 10 Richest

Bernard Arnault, the influential French luxury goods tycoon, has exited the global top 10 richest individuals for the first time since March 2017. His net worth has plummeted by $65 billion in the current year, settling at $143 billion. This significant decline has pushed him below Warren Buffett on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The fortunes of US tech entrepreneurs have seen a considerable surge, with Elon Musk leading the pack. This shift means that, for the first time since the index's inception in 2012, all of the top 10 wealthiest individuals are now Americans.

Several factors have contributed to Arnault's downturn. The conflict in the Middle East has notably impacted demand for LVMH brands, including Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany, in key markets like Dubai. Additionally, business operations in China have faced hurdles, partly due to a trademark dispute that has affected sales.

Arnault's ascent to the top spot, which he briefly held starting in December 2022, occurred during a period of robust growth for the luxury sector, driven by post-pandemic demand in China. However, the market has since softened, influenced by factors such as US tariffs and decreased alcohol consumption in certain regions.

Concerns regarding succession at LVMH also surround Arnault, whose five children from two marriages are employed within the luxury conglomerate. This issue gained prominence when all five children participated in an April shareholders' meeting, where Arnault did not directly address questions about his eventual successor as CEO.
