Argentina Copper Project Faces Roadblock Over Environment
21 Apr
Summary
- Judge halts Vicuna copper project operations for 30 days.
- Environmental concerns cited for lack of impact assessment.
- Project involves massive copper, gold, and silver deposits.

In Argentina's La Rioja province, judicial intervention has led to a halt in operations at the Vicuna copper project. A judge issued a 30-day suspension, citing potential environmental risks and a lack of a required environmental impact assessment. Access via a provincial route was blocked by police following the court order.
Despite the judicial order and road closure, Vicuna Corp, a partnership between BHP and Lundin Mining, reported not having received official notification. The company stated that operations continued using an alternative route. The Vicuna District project, straddling the Argentina-Chile border, includes the Filo del Sol and Josemaria mines.
This development impacts one of the world's largest undeveloped deposits of copper, gold, and silver. The Vicuna project represents a significant potential investment, estimated between $5 billion and $15 billion. Argentina aims to re-enter the global copper market, crucial for electrification, following the closure of its last copper mine in 2018.
