ARAI Responds to E20 Fuel Misconceptions

ARAI Director-General Reji Mathai clarified technical aspects of E20 fuel, differentiating laboratory findings from consumer experiences. He stated that ARAI's observed reduction in fuel efficiency, typically 3-6%, stems from controlled certification procedures. Mathai emphasized that everyday mileage variations are influenced by traffic, driving style, and vehicle maintenance, not solely E20.

Extensive studies on older vehicles, tested using methodologies relevant to their era, are ongoing. While some older vehicles might show a higher impact than the 2-6% seen in current certifications, this is not yet conclusively quantified. Future transitions to higher ethanol blends like E25 or E100 will require rigorous scientific validation and government approval.

Mathai pointed to communication as the primary challenge, noting that social media amplified misconceptions about E20. He stressed that consumers should rely on scientific evidence and approach authorized dealers for genuine issues. The E20 program, a result of years of collaborative studies, underscores the need for clear communication as India evaluates future ethanol blends.
