Apple Supplier Accused of Water Pollution
13 Jun
Summary
- India's pollution regulator claims Tata's factory polluted groundwater.
- Wastewater from the plant allegedly contaminated wells on nearby farms.
- Tata faces potential shutdown if a satisfactory explanation isn't provided.

An Indian pollution control board has alleged that wastewater discharged from a Tata Electronics factory, a critical supplier for Apple's iPhone production, has contaminated groundwater. The factory, located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is accused of polluting the wells of nearby agricultural lands.
Inspections conducted between December 2025 and May 2026 found that wastewater from the plant's rainwater harvesting pond overflowed, contaminating adjacent groundwater. The pollution board issued a warning notice on May 25, 2026, stating Tata had not addressed previous instructions and demanding an explanation to avoid a forced shutdown.
Tata Electronics asserts it is in full compliance with all regulatory norms, citing an independent laboratory analysis. The company stated its commitment to responsible environmental practices. This situation adds to a series of challenges for Apple's supply chain in India, including past incidents like fires and employment practice investigations.
