India Probes Apple Over iPhone Software Damage Claims
15 Sep
Summary
- India's consumer watchdog is investigating Apple's warranty terms.
- Complaints allege iOS 18 update damaged iPhones, requiring costly repairs.
- Apple claims no warranty on software aligns with global industry standards.

India's consumer regulator has launched a "detailed investigation" into Apple's software warranty policies. This action stems from numerous complaints alleging that the iOS 18 update, released in late 2024, caused malfunctions such as screen display and microphone issues on iPhones. Users have reportedly faced significant repair expenses because Apple provides no warranty on its software.
Apple is contesting the accusations, stating in an August letter that its policy of not offering software warranty aligns with international industry practices. The company also asserts that iOS 18 has not exhibited systemic problems. This investigation is part of India's expanding scrutiny of Apple in a key growth market, where the company is increasing manufacturing and market share.
The Indian regulator previously warned Apple about alleged violations of consumer rights. The investigation, escalated on July 29, could compel Apple to issue refunds or alter its business practices. While Apple maintains that only about 11% of iPhones used iOS 18 as of June 2026, the regulator accuses the company of violating the rights of consumers as a class. The cost of repairing an iPhone 15 screen for issues allegedly caused by the software upgrade can exceed a third of its retail price.
