AI Chatbot Lawsuit: Users Claim Deceptive Usage Limits
16 Jun
Summary
- Lawsuit alleges Anthropic misled users on Claude AI usage limits.
- Premium tiers Max 5x and Max 20x supposedly offer less usage.
- Class-action suit filed in California, seeking over $5 million.

A proposed class-action lawsuit alleges that artificial intelligence company Anthropic has misled its subscribers regarding the usage limits of its AI assistant, Claude.
The lawsuit, filed on Sunday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, focuses on the two most expensive paid tiers: Max 5x and Max 20x. It claims that the actual usage caps are substantially less than what Anthropic advertises, which the company describes as a "conversation budget."
Specifically, the complaint contends that the $200 per month Max 20x plan offers only six to eight times the usage of the Pro tier, instead of the advertised 20 times. Similarly, the $100 per month Max 5x plan allegedly provides just three-and-a-half times the Pro usage, falling short of the promised five times.
Plaintiff Karl Khan, who upgraded to the Max 20x plan for coding work by April 2026, reportedly experienced frequent usage cap limitations during coding sprints. He concluded there was a significant discrepancy between Anthropic's advertising and the reality of Claude's usage rates.
Concerns about AI usage limits and subscription costs are growing. The lawsuit seeks class-action status for users of the Max 5x or Max 20x plans since April 2025, with the amount in controversy exceeding $5 million.
