Ancient Coins Unlock India's Rich Past

Ancient coins are recognized as vital historical documents that provide invaluable insights into the past. They shed light on the names of rulers, the administrative languages used, prevailing religious beliefs, and the economic conditions of different eras.

This understanding was shared at a lecture in Trichy, organized by The Thanjavur Tourism Development Council. The event, titled 'Tamil Nadu Coins - 400 BCE to 1840 CE,' focused on the evolution of currency in India.

Experts traced this evolution from the early barter system to the emergence of coinage around the 5th century BCE. The rich diversity of scripts found on coins from Tamil Nadu, including Tamil-Brahmi, Pallava Grantha, and Persian, was particularly noted. Comparative studies of these inscriptions have significantly aided historians in reconstructing India's past.
