- Project aims to strengthen American's position against rivals United and Delta.

American Airlines has announced a $1 billion investment to expand Concourse D at Miami International Airport. This initiative aims to solidify the carrier's status at its primary international hub. The overhaul will transform the current concourse, which handles smaller regional jets, into a three-level facility with 17 new gates.
These new gates will be designed to accommodate larger aircraft, and the expansion includes eliminating outside boarding for improved efficiency. The project is slated to break ground in 2027 and is a component of the airport's extensive, multi-billion dollar upgrade plan to manage increasing passenger volumes.
The investment underscores American Airlines' strategy to compete more effectively with rivals such as United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, who are capitalizing on strong demand for premium travel. Miami serves as American's key gateway to Latin America, reinforcing its strategic importance alongside its domestic hub in Dallas Fort Worth.
American plans to operate its most extensive summer schedule from Miami this year, featuring over 380 peak daily flights to 155 destinations across 45 countries. The airline currently accounts for more than 60% of the airport's traffic.
