AA Scraps Shortest Mexico Route Due to Low Demand
14 Oct
Summary
- American Airlines canceled its shortest flight to Mexico in August.
- The Phoenix-Tijuana route operated for less than two years.
- Low passenger uptake led to the route's discontinuation.
American Airlines discontinued its shortest flight to Mexico, the route between Phoenix and Tijuana, effective August 2026. This flight, initiated in early 2024, was scrapped after failing to meet anticipated passenger numbers.
The one-hour flight, covering 290 miles, was American Airlines' shortest to Mexico. Its cancellation in August 2026 aligns with a wider network optimization by the airline out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Similar underperformance also led to the planned discontinuation of the Phoenix to Monterrey route by December 2026.
American Airlines stated it regularly evaluates its network to grow in Phoenix and optimize operations by removing routes lacking sufficient traffic. The carrier still operates flights to nine other Mexican destinations from Phoenix, including popular locations like Cancun and Los Cabos.
