Summary
- Amazon implements a 3.5% fuel surcharge for independent merchants.
- The temporary fee begins on April 17, impacting US and Canadian sellers.
- Sellers may pass on additional costs to consumers for their products.

Amazon is introducing a temporary 3.5% fuel surcharge for independent merchants that utilize its platform for sales and fulfillment. This new fee is scheduled to take effect on April 17, impacting many sellers who rely on Amazon's warehouses and delivery services. The e-commerce giant stated that it had previously absorbed increased fuel and logistics expenses.
However, similar to other major carriers such as United Parcel Service and FedEx, Amazon is now implementing temporary surcharges to partially recover elevated costs. The U.S. Postal Service also recently announced its first-ever fuel surcharge. For Amazon sellers, the surcharge applies to U.S. and Canadian merchants using Fulfillment by Amazon, with Buy with Prime and Multi-Channel Fulfillment users seeing it begin May 2.
The company indicated its surcharge is lower than those from other carriers and is based on fulfillment fees, not item sale prices. On average, this adds about 17 cents per unit for Fulfillment by Amazon users, with the exact amount varying by item dimensions. It remains at the discretion of individual sellers whether to pass these additional costs onto consumers.
