Amazon Prepares for Sweeping Layoffs as AI Automation Expands

According to reports, Amazon is preparing for a significant round of layoffs in 2025 that will impact employees across multiple divisions, including Amazon Web Services (AWS). The upcoming cuts are part of a broader reorganization led by CEO Andy Jassy, who has signaled that the company's renewed focus on automation and generative AI will fundamentally alter how it operates.

Jassy has stated that some roles will become redundant as the company streamlines its operations and improves efficiency through the use of advanced technologies. While the exact number of jobs affected has not been disclosed, industry analysts estimate that an additional 10,000 to 15,000 positions may be at risk this year if the restructuring continues at the current pace.

The latest round of layoffs follows a series of workforce reductions that Amazon has implemented since 2022, which have already resulted in the loss of more than 27,000 jobs globally. The upcoming cuts are expected to target the company's People Experience and Technology (PXT) division, which oversees human resources, recruitment, and employee management.

Despite Amazon's claims that the layoffs are driven by strategic reviews and shifting business priorities, several signs suggest that the company's growing adoption of artificial intelligence is playing a significant role in these workforce changes. Current and former employees have reported that headcount reductions are closely aligned with automation initiatives within AWS, raising concerns that some teams are being downsized before receiving adequate training in the new AI systems.
