3 Jun
Summary
- Renovated El Barrio streetscape vandalized less than two months after completion.
- Nine years of planning and fundraising culminated in the streetscape project.
- A pop-up shop fundraiser is planned to support La Plazita Park development.

Vandalism has recently impacted the newly renovated El Barrio neighborhood in Amarillo, with street lamps and banner poles damaged. This incident occurred less than two months after a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of the first phase of the neighborhood's streetscape project. The renovation effort, which began in March 2017, is the culmination of nine years of extensive planning, fundraising, and collaboration with various partners and funding sources, including TxDOT and the City of Amarillo.
The Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee (BNPC), a nonprofit organization established in March 2017, is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the El Barrio area. Despite the recent vandalism, the committee remains committed to its mission. To support ongoing development, particularly the creation of La Plazita Park, the BNPC is hosting a pop-up shop fundraiser on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 918 South Houston St.
The pop-up shop will feature numerous vendors, family-friendly activities, food trucks, and even free vaccinations from the City of Amarillo Health Department for uninsured individuals. The BNPC is currently working to raise $230,000 for the park, with hopes to break ground in the summer of 2027.
