AI Data Center to Tap PA Natural Gas

Alpha Compute, an AI infrastructure company, has entered into a binding term sheet to acquire land and natural gas rights in Pennsylvania for $55 million. The purchase is intended for the development of a significant 200-megawatt data center campus. This strategic move aims to meet the escalating demand for artificial intelligence computing power across the United States.

The Pennsylvania site, situated in the Marcellus shale basin, will feature integrated gas-fired power generation. Alpha Compute anticipates the data center campus to commence operations by the third quarter of 2027. The facility also holds the potential for future expansion to generate one gigawatt of power, further bolstering its capacity.

This project represents an emerging trend where data center developers combine on-site energy production with their facilities, especially as grid connections struggle to keep pace with AI infrastructure needs. The deal includes undeveloped Marcellus gas rights, covering approximately 1,800 mineral acres. Alpha Compute expects the total build-out, including electrical connections, to cost around $500 million over several years, following the initial $55 million land acquisition.

The company, traditionally focused on confidential computing, is a new entrant to data center development. This Pennsylvania project would mark its inaugural data center development in the United States. While the transaction is subject to due diligence, financing, and permitting, Alpha Compute anticipates closing the deal within 60 days. The company's ventures cater to a growing interest in secure computing services, employing end-to-end encryption for sensitive data protection.
