AI Boost for Latin America: GDP Up, Wages May Fall
22 Sep
Summary
- AI could increase regional GDP by 5.1% in a decade.
- Wages might drop as much as 20.9% if workers can't adapt.
- IDB urges more financing and price protection for critical minerals.

Latin America and the Caribbean could see their economies expand by 5.1% over the next decade with widespread artificial intelligence adoption, according to forthcoming research from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). However, this economic growth comes with a significant caveat. If workers cannot adapt and transition into emerging job sectors, wages in the region could experience a sharp decline, potentially falling by up to 20.9%. Limited AI adoption and minimal productivity gains would result in a more modest GDP increase of only 0.3%. In such a scenario, wages might see a small rise of 2.3% to 5.3% if labor successfully moves to expanding sectors. The IDB, a major development lender in the region, also advocates for increased financing and stable minimum-price protection for critical mineral supply chains. The bank's president emphasized differentiating minerals produced under ethical labor and environmental standards from those that are not.
