Global Roadshows for Airport Privatization Launch
21 Oct
Summary
- Government to host roadshows in global financial hubs.
- Bidding for 11 airports begins by December, deals by FY27.
- Airports will be bundled, pairing small with large facilities.
The government is set to conduct promotional roadshows in key international financial centers to draw global investors for an upcoming airport privatization initiative. The bidding process for eleven airports is scheduled to commence by December, with the objective of finalizing all agreements by the end of fiscal year 2027. This round introduces a new strategy of bundling airports into five distinct groups, pairing smaller airports with larger ones under 50-year lease agreements.
These roadshows aim to familiarize prospective bidders with the new bundling modality and gather feedback. They are planned for cities like Dubai and Singapore, alongside domestic hubs such as Mumbai, to maximize international and domestic participation. The government anticipates a diverse range of investors, including sovereign wealth funds, corporate houses, and existing airport operators like GMR and Adani Groups.
To address concerns about market concentration, the government will impose a cap on the number of airports a single entity can bid for. This measure is intended to prevent monopolies and foster a more competitive aviation sector. Bundled airports include Varanasi with Gaya and Kushinagar, Amritsar with Kangra, Bhubaneswar with Hubballi, Raipur with Aurangabad, and Tiruchirappalli with Tirupati.
