Air India Cuts US Travel Time by 3 Hours
6 Nov
Summary
- Flights now bypass Rome, saving 2-3 hours on US journeys.
- Revised route uses Iraqi airspace, impacting travel time.
- Fleet expansion includes new Airbus A350-1000 deliveries.

Air India has successfully reinstated non-stop flights connecting Mumbai and New Delhi to the United States, significantly reducing travel durations. By re-routing through Iraqi airspace, the airline has eliminated the previous mandatory refuelling stop in Rome.
This strategic adjustment trims approximately two to three hours from the total journey time. Flights now typically take around 18 hours, compared to the prior 21-hour duration. The change benefits passengers traveling to major hubs like New York's JFK and Newark Liberty International Airport.
An airline source indicated that the closure of Iraqi airspace had necessitated longer, indirect routes with refueling halts. The renewed access to this airspace provides greater flexibility for Air India’s long-haul services to Western destinations.
Beyond route optimization, Air India is expanding its widebody fleet. The airline anticipates the arrival of its first Airbus A350-1000 by early December, with a total of three expected by March. Further fleet enhancements include new Boeing 787 deliveries.
By the end of 2027, Air India aims for approximately 70% of its widebody aircraft to feature upgraded cabins, enhancing passenger comfort and service standards.
