AI Fuels Fiercer Rivalry in Finance at Quant Championship
8 Oct
Summary
- AI is transforming hedge funds, increasing competition among managers.
- The International Quant Championship saw 156,000 students compete.
- Victor Ayebameru from Nigeria won the top prize in Singapore.

The International Quant Championship, held this week in Singapore, revealed how artificial intelligence is intensifying competition within the hedge fund sector. Quantitative hedge funds, which leverage algorithms to identify market patterns, have seen substantial gains recently, partly due to AI's capabilities. The competition, organized by WorldQuant, attracted over 156,000 student participants from 13 countries, a near doubling from the previous year, largely attributed to the accessibility of AI tools.
This year's event marked a significant increase in solo participants, a trend organizers linked to AI enabling individuals to perform tasks previously requiring entire teams. "It now takes me less than an hour to code what it used to take me a week or even a month to do," shared one finalist. The championship aims to identify emerging talent, with AI's influence evident in the broadened applicant pool: 28% of applicants hailed from Africa, up from 4% in 2023, and female participation rose to 26% from 18%.
While AI promises novel approaches and lowers technical barriers, its immediate impact on junior roles is a concern for aspiring managers. Some anticipate AI might reduce the need for entry-level positions, a sentiment that contrasts with the view that AI should augment human capabilities. Victor Ayebameru from Nigeria was ultimately crowned the champion, winning a share of the $100,000 prize pool.
