AI Trade Roars Back, Tech Stocks Surge Higher
14 Aug
Summary
- The Nasdaq led the market's ascent, climbing 2.7% on renewed AI trade enthusiasm.
- Honeywell Aerospace was a bottom performer, down 19.5% before its position was exited.
- Microsoft's strong AI investments translated into substantial returns and free cash flow.

The stock market experienced a significant upward movement, primarily driven by the resurgence of the artificial intelligence trade. The Nasdaq Composite led the gains, increasing by 2.7%, followed closely by the S&P 500, which rose 2.6%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, up 2.3%.
These gains occurred amidst notable market volatility. The forced liquidation of Situational Awareness, a highly leveraged AI-focused hedge fund, caused temporary pressure on major market stocks. Honeywell Aerospace, initially the worst-performing stock in the portfolio at a 19.5% decline, was sold after its management issued lowered guidance, citing supply chain issues.
Microsoft emerged as a top performer, soaring 22.8%. Its quarterly report revealed substantial returns from AI investments, supported by disciplined capital spending and $19 billion in free cash flow, shifting sentiment from negative to positive.
Eaton also demonstrated strength, rising 16.1% after exceeding earnings expectations and increasing its full-year outlook. The company's performance provided a positive signal for AI infrastructure stocks, which had been affected by the hedge fund unwind.
Salesforce rallied 12%, reflecting a renewed investor interest in software-as-a-service models. The broader market rotation benefited enterprise software stocks, with strong results from Microsoft and Palantir further fueling the comeback.
On the downside, Linde fell 7.9% despite reporting better-than-expected earnings, as investors focused on weaker guidance and margin pressures in its healthcare segment. Apple experienced a 9.3% decline post-earnings due to higher memory costs and supply constraints, though its capital-light AI strategy and upcoming Apple Intelligence rollout are viewed positively.
Meta Platforms saw a 12.9% drop, driven by concerns over its substantial AI spending and a softer revenue outlook, despite a strong advertising business. The company's free cash flow also saw a significant reduction.
